The Perfect Moment: Creating New Snacking & Treating Occasions

Over the past year, shoppers’ reasons for reaching for treats and snacks and their expectations for what they want from their favorite brands have shifted significantly. This session explores new occasions and moments, both everyday and seasonal, that are driving treating and snacking. Pulling from relevant data, this session will specifically highlight generational snacking and treating behavior trends, new campaigns and programs around both classic holidays and new celebration moments and actionable tools for leveraging seasonal opportunities to drive engagement and purchases.


Joel Allen is the senior vice president of non-foods for Hy-Vee, a supermarket chain in the Midwestern U.S. with more than 265 locations across Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. With deep knowledge of the retail business, Joel can speak to what retailers are looking for from category leaders and how retail is approaching moments to attract and convert more shoppers. Prior to joining Hy-Vee, Joel was a board member for the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association.

Jennifer leads Instacart’s Midwest growing team, which is responsible for building long-term partnerships and executing brand activation strategies within the Instacart marketplace. She began her journey at Instacart 5+ years ago, and prior to her current role, she helped lead the brand partnerships team in securing partnerships with the top 25 CPG companies in the U.S. Prior to joining Instacart, Jennifer worked as a sales director at Quotient, where she helped build CPG client partnerships in the early days of digital couponing.

Teresa Tarantino is the founding editor of the National Confectioners Association publication Candy & Snack TODAY, as well as the Sweets & Snacks Expo Daily and the Candy & Snack TODAY Spotlight e-newsletter. She has more than 30 years of experience covering the confectionery and snack industries, is a featured speaker and moderator at events and conferences and has gone behind the scenes and reported on hundreds of confectionery and snack manufacturing facilities around the globe. She is the owner of ProPress, Inc., a full service creative, editorial, marketing/PR and advertising sales company and has served as the executive director of the NCSA/Candy Hall of Fame since 1997.
